Blocked drains in Somerset get the same fixed price from us as anywhere else, but not the same wait. Our engineers are based in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch. The county begins about 40 miles from Poole and carries on west for roughly another 50, so a job in Yeovil and a job in Minehead are very different drives. We take calls from all of it, and you get a real arrival time when you call rather than a number picked to win the booking.

Wessex Water, Somerset Council and your drains
Wessex Water runs the public sewers across nearly all of Somerset: we've checked that Taunton, Bridgwater, Frome and Minehead are on its network. South West Water serves a few small areas of the county. For a blocked public sewer, or sewage in the street, report it to Wessex Water or ring 0345 600 4 600, which is staffed around the clock. Road drains belong to Somerset Council, which took over from the county and four district councils in April 2023. It cleans road gullies on a fixed cycle: yearly where flooding is a known risk, every two years on rural roads, and every four years on urban 30 and 40mph roads that aren't prone to flooding. So the gully outside your house may not be due for a while. If one is blocked, report it on the council's website with the road name and the nearest house. Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset are separate councils with their own road drains.
The Levels, the moors and floodwater in drains
The Somerset Levels are low, flat land: marine clay near the coast and peat moors inland, drained by ditches called rhynes that internal drainage boards manage. In a wet winter the moors fill. During the 2013 to 2014 floods, Muchelney was cut off for almost a month.
Storm Chandra brought the water back. Somerset Council declared a major incident on 27 January 2026, after a gauge near Taunton recorded its wettest seven days since it was installed in 1995. By the time the response moved to recovery on 18 February, 91 properties had been reported flooded, and only 23 of them were on the Levels and Moors. Flooding here isn't only a Levels problem.
The council warns that floodwater may contain sewage, and it always leaves silt behind. Once it has gone down, flush the toilets and run the taps. If a gully or blocked outside drain on your property is still slow a week later, silt may be packed in the pipe. A CCTV drain survey from £150 shows whether anything has shifted.

Do you come out to Taunton and Minehead?
Yes. Taunton is about 69 miles by road from Poole and Minehead about 93, so both sit at the far end of what we cover, and you'll get a real arrival time when you call. For an emergency in west Somerset a nearer firm will often be faster, and we'll say so. For a survey or a planned repair, the distance hardly matters.
Is Wessex Water responsible for the sewers everywhere in Somerset?
Almost everywhere. Wessex Water provides sewerage for nearly all of the county, including Taunton, Bridgwater, Frome and Minehead, while South West Water serves a few small areas. Your sewerage bill shows which company is yours. Whichever it is, it clears public sewers and shared drains without charging you.
How often does Somerset Council clean road gullies?
It depends on the road. Gullies in areas known to flood are cleaned every year, those on rural roads every two years, and those on urban 30 and 40mph roads every four years. If a gully near you is blocked before its turn, report it on Somerset Council's website with the road name and where the drain is.
Should I get my drains checked after a flood?
If floodwater went over your drains, yes, once it has gone. It leaves silt in gullies and pipes, and it can carry sewage. Flush the toilets and run the taps first. If anything still drains slowly, gurgles or smells a week later, a camera survey from £150 shows whether silt is sitting in the pipe or a joint has moved.
